A Five-Minute Mobile Website Check

Seven things to look at on your phone right now. Takes five minutes, costs nothing.

Open your own website on your phone. Not a computer — your phone, the way your customers see it. Then check these seven things.

The checklist

  1. Can you tell what the business does in the first few seconds?

Without scrolling. If someone has to read three paragraphs to figure out you're a plumber, that's too long.

  2. Can you tap a phone number to call?

Try it. If the dialer doesn't open, the number is not linked. Here's the fix.

  3. Can you find the hours?

Check the contact page. If they're not there, add them. Guide.

  4. Can you tell what area is served?

Cities, counties, or a radius. If it just says "locally owned," that doesn't say where. Guide.

  5. Does the contact form work?

Fill it out and send a test message. Check if it arrives. Guide.

  6. Is the text readable?

No pinching to zoom. No text running off the edge of the screen. No white text on a light background.

  7. Are the name, phone, and address the same everywhere?

Check the header, footer, contact page, and Google. If any of them disagree, fix the wrong one.

If everything passes

Good. Check again next month. Things drift.

If something fails

Fix the first one. Then the next. One at a time is fine — each fix is a real improvement for the next person who visits your site.
