How to Make a Phone Number Tappable

If someone on a phone can't tap your number to call, you're losing the easiest calls to get.

Most people looking for a trade business are on a phone. If your number is just text on the screen, they have to memorize it, switch to the dialer, and type it in. Most won't.

The fix

Wrap your phone number in a tel: link. That is the only thing that makes it tappable.

(512) 555-1234

The +1 is the country code. Use it even for local numbers — phones handle it correctly.

Where it should appear

 • The header, visible on every page without scrolling
 • The contact page
 • The footer
 • Any page that asks someone to call you

Common mistakes

 • Phone number inside an image. A phone cannot tap text baked into a picture. Use real text.
 • Number is there but not a link. Just having the digits on the page is not enough. It must be an link.
 • Number only on the contact page. If someone has to hunt for it, they may not bother.
 • Tiny tap target. The link should be at least 44 pixels tall so a thumb can hit it reliably.

How to check yours

 1. Open your website on your phone.
 2. Try to tap the phone number.
 3. If your phone's dialer opens with the number filled in, it works.
 4. If nothing happens, it needs the fix above.
