An old phone number on your website is sending customers to a dead line or, worse, to whoever has that number now. Here is everywhere you need to check and fix it.
Check these places
- Your website — every page, not just the contact page. Check the header, footer, and any page that mentions a phone number.
- Google Business Profile — search your business name on Google and see what number shows up. Edit it at business.google.com.
- Yelp — if you have a listing, check it.
- Facebook — if you have a business page, check the About section.
- Apple Maps — search for your business on an iPhone.
- Yellow Pages / YP.com — these listings outlive the businesses sometimes. If there's an old one, claim it and fix it or request removal.
- Industry directories — Angi, HomeAdvisor, Thumbtack, BBB, local chamber of commerce.
- Print materials — truck lettering, business cards, door hangers, yard signs. Anything still in circulation.
How to find listings you forgot about
Search Google for your old phone number in quotes: "(512) 555-1234". Every page that still shows it will come up.
Fix the important ones first
Google Business Profile and your website are where most customers will see the number. Fix those today. Work through the rest over the next week.
Prevent it next time
Keep a list of everywhere your phone number appears. When you change it, go through the list. It is boring work, but every listing you miss is a customer who can't reach you.
